Why Miss 4% Universe in place of Miss Universe ?
Nature is supremely diverse. There are 8 billion people on the planet Earth. Each to its own unique potential and virtues. We are just considering population of homo sapiens while there are lakhs of plant and animal species in our environment and we never know about aliens and the plants they might like to grow !
There is a fun fact too. All the stars, planets & galaxies that can be seen today make up just 4 percent of the universe. The other 96 percent is made of stuff astronomers can't see, detect or even comprehend. Yet we ( the most rational species ) have the audacity to conduct competitions like Miss Universe. When you do not know more than half of what is , is it coherent to conduct a competition and assigning a title ?
The magnitude of the intelligence that created the world cannot be comprehended. But one thing is certain he/she/them whoever they are they are lovers of diversity.
From food to flowers , the choices we have - there is no end to them.
Not so surprisingly, The Hindu Gods are also quite different and unique. From Goddess kali to Lord Ganesha , everyone has different boons , qualities and physical features as well. I never heard any devotee saying that they will not worship Ganesha because of his nose or stomach but I have definitely witnessed denial of opportunities to people because of the shape of their nose or stomach. One comes across people who honour devi kali with gold but they will never accept a girl as their bahu (daughter in law) if she is black or brown in colour.
Body shaming is a form of bullying in which a person’s physical appearance is targeted. Physical appearance here refers to Weight,Shape,Size,Style ,Clothing choices, Hair style and Makeup (too much makeup, too little make up).
Both men and women are vulnerable to body shaming. However women are more at risk because our society believes that beauty with brains is a compliment not an insult because women are ought to beautiful and brainless and one who is intelligent and a female is rare.
I remember one accident very clearly from my own life. I had developed a disease called Henoch Schönlein purpura (HSP) when I was 9 or 10 years old. Rather than worrying about whether I will survive or not , people around were only interested in dowry to be given for me. This was beginning of a never ending cycle that haunted me for years. It impacted my confidence , decision making abilities and most importantly happiness. Fighting any disease is way more easy than to handle body shaming.
For most part of my life , I did not realise this was happening to me. All the opportunities , prizes , moments of enjoyment used to get snatched away because of the society's obsession with slim figure and white coloured skin.
One wrongly identifies with the labels created and imposed by society for their own convenience. The first step is to know one is not what one's environment tells you - people around you - friends , colleagues or relatives.
You are defined by who you think you are. There is nothing wrong in improving oneself or becoming a better version every day but the process has to be rooted in self love & acceptance.
Ofcourse , meditation & good company helps in rising above any kind of traumatic experience but until & unless one makes a conscious effort towards self acceptance , nothing works. One cannot change what life throws at us - the good or the bad but one can definitely choose what one throws at oneself - rose petals or thorns. The choice is our very own !
So , anyone reading this , choose yourself each and every day. You never know when lord yama will come & you will be gone.
Until then,keep celebrating life.
